The phone is already available in the market and many Xiaomi users are waiting for custom recovery to get root access on their MI 6 phones. So here in this guide, I will show you how to flash TWRP custom Recovery and after that how to root the Xiaomi Mi 6. TWRP or Team Win Recovery Project has finally made its way to the Xiaomi Mi6, albeit through an unofficial channel, which is okay as this is what usually happens.

Prerequisites

  • Enabled USB Debugging and OEM Unlock.
To enable USB Debugging,
  • Go to Settings> About Phone> Software info;
  • Now, tap the Build number repeatedly until you see a message that says “You are now a developer”.
  • Now, Go back to Settings and tap on Developer mode.
  • Now, Scroll down the list to find OEM Unlock and USB Debugging. Enable them both.
  • Make sure that you have Xiaomi USB Driver installed on your PC
  • Download ADB fastboot driver and Install on your PC. Note; Install ADB driver on Windows C drive (C:/ADB)
  • To ensure this, fully charge your device because the process takes some time.

Steps to Install TWRP on Xiaomi Mi 6

Step 1. Download and Install ADB driver on your PC (Make sure to install the driver on Drive C;). Now, open the ADB folder on your desktop.
Step 2. Now. download Twrp_recovery.img and copy it to ADB folder. Also, Rename it to twrp.img
Step 3. In the ADB folder press shift button and mouse right click in empty space then click on start command prompt here.
Step 4. Next, Connect the Xiaomi Mi 6 phone to the PC with USB cable.
Step 5. Now its time to boot the phone into the fastboot mode. To do this enter the following command in the windows and hit enter.
adb reboot bootloader
Step 6. Once the device booted into fastboot mode, Enter the following command to flash TWRP.

root xiaomi mi 6
         fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Steps to Root Xiaomi Mi 6

Step 1. First of all, Download the Super Su.zip file and copy it to Phone internal memory.
Step 2. Now, boot your phone into TWRP recovery mode. To do this first power off your phone and press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons for about 7 seconds till you see Mi bunny mascot on the screen.
Step 3. In Recovery tap on the Install button, Navigate to the location where you copied Super Su.zip and select it. Swipe the installation confirmation slider when prompted.
Step 4. Once the flashing is complete, tap Reboot> system.
Congratulations! Your new Xiaomi Mi 6 is now rooted with the TWRP recovery. To verify your device is rooted or not, you can see Super SU app in the App drawer that means your device has been successfully Rooted.

Troubleshoot

If anything goes wrong, and you want to go back to the original stock ROM, then you can install the official firmware on your device. Installing the firmware, will again reinstall all the partitions on your device and delete any incorrect installation or anything. Once you return to the Original Stock ROM, your device will be new-like software-wise.
